Closet Tours: Meet Brett

It’s been a dream of ours to tour Brett Lord’s closet for years, and the time has finally come. With a personal style rooted in what he describes as eclectic, adventurous and oddly cohesive, Lord is an expert at breaking the rules in a stylistic and chic way.

As we enter Pride Month, Lord’s closet tour is a reminder to celebrate queerness authentically. At eight years old, he played “Tiny Tim” and has been a performer ever since, finding value in the art of a costume both on and off the stage. He styles outside of the lines as a way to express himself, and to also feel like he belongs in his skin.

“Stop dulling yourself,” Lord told us. “Because God forbid, someone sees you and thinks, ‘that’s a look.'”

Lord’s confidence is a testament to his closet full of special pieces, but can also be felt in the way he interacts with others. He is known within his circle as a great host, and typically, a night at Lord’s house involved trying on clothes from his “dress up closet,” which is home to pieces reserved for his guests to take with them.

Lord shared his tips and tricks for finding a personal style and bringing it to life, which have stuck with us since we exited his incredible closet.

“Overdressing is a construct for insecure people,” he stated matter-of-factly, as our jaws hit the floor because that is a statement that really cannot be denied. “Don’t save the stepping out of the box moment for something that’s high pressure.”

Lord wears his closet to death, focusing on sustainability by investing in pieces that will last him forever, rather than leaning into the fashion industry’s tendency to promote trends and waste.

Enter Lord’s closet, and you’ll feel that sense of awe that we did, as a true fashionista who reminds us that style is personal, but it’s also whimsical, and why not dress the way you actually feel? The sense of confidence and self-love that results is much more genuine than trying to fit a mold or a trend.

The Curio Cabinet Closet Tours is a series exploring clothing collections from the best-dressed folks in Denver and beyond. We believe that entering someoneโ€™s closet is comparable to entering their mind or soul. As a result, weโ€™re discovering the looks that make someone unique, which paves the way to understanding their personality and presence.

Follow along as we explore closets and if you have a wardrobe meant to be seen or know of someone who does, let us know at hello@thecuriocabinetmagazine.com.
