In Full Swing: Golfcore’s Preppy Comeback for Fall

While golf isn’t necessarily a fall or winter sport, its aesthetic can be seen on the racks and in our online carts as we are building a fall capsule wardrobe. “Golfcore” traditionally makes an appearance in summer months, especially around the time of the U.S. Open, but we are seeing the preppy Ralph Lauren polos last as staples into the winter months this year.

Creative Director and EVP of Women’s & Children’s Design at J.Crew, Olympia Gayot, is on the pulse of the current fall trends and the context behind the styles that are all the rave this season. In an interview on the podcast Lipstick on the Rim, she tells co-hosts Molly Sims and Emese Gormley about how skirts of all lengths, shapes and sizes are being worn into fall. As the warmer weather lasts longer into the year, the trends adapt. We are seeing transitional pieces worn longer and differently, like fitted cashmere that often resembles a Golfcore vibe, especially when it’s layered.

A polo is a lightweight, elevated way to layer as the sun sets earlier and the days become colder. Golfcore can be worn not just on the course, but in the office, after a workout, to brunch and even on a night out if it’s done right.

We compiled a list of our favorite preppy fall pieces from Denver boutiques, along with tips to elevate your look.

The Arden Varsity Sweater from M. Bolden Boutique

$98.50

Why it works: Owner of M. Bolden Boutique Rachel Marie Hurst says it best in the item description – “preppy meets powerful” with this comfortable, slouchy yet posh sweater. Pair it with lace tights and a silk midi skirt and layer with a jacket to combine different textures, accomplishing the fall transitional look that will get you through the chilly morning and into the cooler afternoon. Or, wear it with The Camille Pinstripe Bermuda Shorts ($63.75) for the ultimate preppy, navy monochrome look.

Kinda Outdoorsy Trucker Hat from Moody June

$35

Why it works: Accessories can be the preppy addition to an outfit too. Moody June’s trucker hat collection puts a spin on your traditional cap with a plaid bill. This is the kind of hat you can throw on with a pair of jeans and a sweater, or you can even wear it with the Mediterranean Muse Set ($85) for a girly spin on preppy. Make it your own by adding layered necklaces and you will truly be living up to the “kinda outdoorsy” sentiment.

Mirelle Funnel Neck in Heather Grey from Strut

$246

Why it works: This soft brushed fleece sweater from Strut is the definition of preppy chic, with buttons offering dimension and a collar signaling “put-together.” We would pair this with the Miro Reworked Jean in Sepia Cheetah ($298) to throw a feminine twist on that classic polo look.

Fallon Colorblock Cardi at Coco + Grace

$92

Why it works: Coco + Grace’s preppy spin on the popular Barn Jacket style this season is a jacket that we can see going with anything. From denim to a mini black skirt with sheer tights, this is a functional, stylish layer. We would invest in the After Hours Dress ($120) as a staple black dress and wear the Cardi over it, with booties and jewelry for a look that can be worn all day and into the night.

Blue & Green Vest from Patterns & Pops

$78

Why it works: Patterns & Pops proves that a preppy vest is the perfect layering piece. With either the Mock Neck ($38) or a lace long sleeve underneath, you’ll be stylish and set as it’s still 70 degrees midday and closer to 30 at night.

There’s something timeless about the ease of preppy style, especially when it feels a little sporty and a little refined. Whether it’s a crisp polo layered under cashmere, a vintage-inspired vest or a cardigan that carries you from morning to night, this season encourages the preppy to move beyond the course.
